We look for signs of healing in our life when we are actively trying to heal the past for ourselves, and it may not always be apparent that we’ve healed or changed. Sometimes we expect huge changes immediately, but we may find that changes are happening in more subtle or unobvious ways. Other times it can be radical, fast and very obvious that everything has shifted for you in a positive direction. Healing can even be tumultuous, anxiety producing or uncomfortable, which are signs you are letting go and moving forward. And this healing can all happen through so many different means and avenues.
Whether it’s a book that brings you some epiphany, clarity on your past that comes to you in a quiet moment, a new situation in your life that helps you to heal your old beliefs, or potentially more radical healing as you work with a healer.
The World of Healers
I’m going to start on the more ‘radical’ end with healers. I want to talk a little about all the different healers out there as well, because there are a multitude who use all kinds of different modalities. I’ve worked with a lot of healers over the years, and done some healing work on people myself. There are healers that work with your mind (therapy or hypnosis), and others that work with your energy (reiki, transpersonal counseling, EFT, shamanic healing, or past life healers), and some that work with your body (Zero balancing, Craniosacral, Neurovascular Integration, Acupressure and Healing Touch). These are just a few types of healers – the list is rather endless actually.
There is a healer I’ve been working with over the last 9 months or so, and while her sessions do feel amazing and powerful, in the beginning I sometimes left wondering if anything was really healed. What signs should I be watching for? And then she started having me take notes between appointments, and I was astonished at some of the patterns. For one, my dreams were evolving. Sometimes my dreams felt like they were so odd that I couldn’t figure them out, but she would dissect them, and I was shocked at what they were demonstrating.
Dream a Little Dream
I always used to have dreams that I lived in hotels – but not just any hotel – kind of crummy ones that I shared rooms with multiple people. Situations that felt awful and out of control. More like a nightmare really! Those dreams evolved to living with my family, who were always underfoot and in my business (also in hotels). Then I had moved into a small dorm-like room in my dreams with a connecting door where I could hear my neighbors. And then I had a dream with a very large apartment of my own (that was on the 2nd floor of a business – no other units). They clearly showed progress in the healing work we were doing.
We have had such interesting conversations around these dreams and the details of them. I’ve gained control in my life through all the healing work. I’ve healed so many old beliefs, feelings of unworthiness, and stopped allowing people to manipulate and take advantage of me. Mind you, I was already on this path – but it was interesting to see how we were further healed my old patterns and how my dreams have also evolved to demonstrate that. But I probably wouldn’t have thought much of them until she had me start taking notes in the mornings when I woke up.
Don’t Call Me a Chicken
It’s funny how blatant dreams can be too, and sometimes it takes someone else dissecting it with us to see the often very clear message. During a time I was thinking about my business and moving it in new directions, and we were working on my fears around that, I had a dream that I was walking my dogs in a downtown area of a large and unfamiliar city.
I felt a bit overwhelmed by it, trying to manage my dogs in that circumstance of traffic and people everywhere – when out of the crowd walks a giant chicken (as tall as me), coming right towards me. I yelled, “No!” in my dream, and it turned into a person and walked away. This healer and I laughed when we realized I was calling my own bluff on my fears about trying new things. I was literally telling myself that I was being a “chicken” about venturing into new territory with my business.
Healing Can be Intense
Beyond the dreams, there were other things I have noted after the healing sessions. I’ve also noticed that in the days following an intense session with this healer, that all the emotions of everything that we unearthed worked themselves out of me, quite literally. I got very emotional, sometimes crabby, and on occasion very anxious.
One session in particular we dealt with a very traumatic event that I had buried pretty deep from when I was younger. After unearthing that and working through it (through hypnosis, reiki and other means), I had intense anxiety for a week (and yes anxiety can be sign of healing – when you are releasing or overcoming the things you fear, it can cause anxiety). I mean, pull the car over so you can sit and catch your breath kind of anxiety. I didn’t sleep much either, and my journal entries were all the fears and anger around the event coming out. It was an awful week!
But I have to say that once that passed, so did my intense feelings about the trauma that happened. All the fears around it had dissipated and I could talk about it easily and unemotionally. We had cleared it and I had detached from it. But it was intense. Healing isn’t always like putting a soothing balm on your skin. It’s often like ripping off the bandages and letting the gaping wound bleed for a while. But if you intentionally allow it to ‘bleed’ like I did, you can move through it. Healing can be intense, but absolutely life changing!
Jaw Dropping Clarity
Outside of working with healers (though it can happen around those times as well), another sign of healing is having moments of intense clarity. Suddenly, out of nowhere, you see the reality of a past situation, or even a current situation. It’s a huge ah-ha moment where your jaw may even drop. I’ve had many of them in doing all this healing work. One night I was cooking dinner and had jaw-dropping clarity on an incident in college. It was clarity that clearly demonstrated a shift in my ‘worthiness’ thinking where I suddenly saw what happened in a new way, and it was so freeing! I think so often we blame ourselves for things that weren’t really our fault, and this was one of those moments that I took the blame even when it wasn’t my own – but I didn’t see it that way until now.
Heart Healing
In other moments of clarity, we may realize that we have released something with all our healing work when suddenly we are open to something new we never would have been before. I personally had a moment like this recently when I realized that I hadn’t been letting someone into my life that I really saw potential with – an amazing man who already made me happy with every interaction. I realized that I was putting up old walls and fears around it and not being open to the possibilities.
But suddenly I had a moment of clarity one day and saw what I was doing. I realized I needed to let those old fearful ways of handling things go, and I felt compelled to reach out and open that door in my life to him. I was just so thrilled that he was receptive. That night I felt an onslaught of powerful emotions that I had never experienced in my life – so strong that I couldn’t even sleep. I had clearly healed something big and opened myself to something potentially amazing – which is the best part of the healing journey!
Media can Provide Healing and Clarity too
We can also have amazing healing through reading, watching videos, listening to podcasts, or even taking classes. They can provide us with more of these shifts or moments of clarity. Often the Universe guides us to the right book, video, podcast or class to teach us what we need to know to move forward and heal. I feel like I am often guided to books for this purpose, and they often have information in them that resonates deeply with me. Information that makes something in your life amazingly clear. You are led to what you need in the moment for sure. But they do provide healing, whether you feel the outright shift in your thinking or beliefs even, or if it more passively affects you.
Music can also be healing for us. I have noticed that sometimes the words of a song become intensely clear and bring forward an amazing message for me in the moment. It can be a song I’ve heard many times, but suddenly the words make sense in a new way for me. I have, on occasion, had tears rolling down my face while on a run when this happens. Suddenly, you are delivered a Divine healing message through a song. Another beautiful way of not just getting guidance, but often times healing. Let the emotions flow when that happens and allow the healing to occur.
I also invite you to take notice when a song pops into your head or gets your attention somehow, even if you don’t know it very well. I usually go and look up the lyrics, and am totally astonished at the beautiful message that has just been delivered to me.
Fresh Air and Other Healing Outlets
Personally, I also find nature to be incredibly healing. When I feel anxious or worried, a walk outside, or even sitting on the patio for a while can be incredibly calming. Nature has a way of grounding our energy, and bringing us back to a healthier state of calm. So, if you feel anxious (even if it’s due to healing), get outside for a while and breathe the fresh air. I can guarantee you will come back feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.
Other wonderful and more physical healing outlets that can bring you immediate relief when needed are yoga, meditation, and really any form of exercise. When I’ve had a stressful day, a good run or a yoga class are wonderful for me. The movement is a rather meditative and yet invigorating thing that clears energy from our bodies. And sometimes just quiet and peace is what we need, and meditation, a hot Epsom salt bath, or some quiet time can do the same thing for you. All of these things will bring you very noticeable healing and peace from anxiety, stress or worries. These will all help you come back to a more positive frame of mind and clear out the negative. Find the things that work for you in your day to day life to clear and heal yourself.
Healing is Amazing
There are just so many ways of healing or finding clarity in your life. Sometimes we are very intentional about it, and other times it’s much more passive. But we are most definitely guided on our healing journey, so watch for the signs. I think the most important thing though, besides noticing outward changes that have occurred in how you are handling your life, is to notice how you feel. And to also allow yourself to have any range of emotions needed to properly heal. I know I’ve even found healing through watching a comedy (when I’m being way too hard on myself) or even a Disney movie (when I need to honor my inner child). There are so many things our soul needs and we just need to be aware of what is ‘calling us’.
The most outward and lasting signs of any healing you may do though are changes in how you feel about yourself and your life. There may be things that you notice need to change in your life as a result of healing, because you realize that you deserve more. You may also notice yourself responding to things in a new and healthier (or more authentic) way, or with a new openness, trust, or calm even. That you are open to new ideas and opportunities, or better options in your life that you may not have felt worthy of before. Because as you heal yourself, and subsequently your self-worth and your heart – you allow the Universe to deliver you more. More magic, more joy, and many amazing outcomes.
